Since its inception more than three decades ago, Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City has grown into one of the most successful urban renewal projects in the nation. The success of Battery Park City is largely due to its ability to adapt its master plan to the changing environment around it. Increasing public open space and adopting environmental guidelines for all construction taking place after the year 2000 are initiatives that have had a positive impact on the project.
